Longing: Is there a right way to feel it?

Longing… that unexpected visit that arrives unannounced. Sometimes it comes as gently as a breeze; other times, like a wave that engulfs us completely. Who hasn’t felt longing for someone who was special in their life?

Perhaps it’s for a friend who drifted away, a love that’s no longer part of your routine, or a family member who chose to follow a different path. The truth is, when we truly connect with someone, we create bonds that even time cannot erase. But what to do when these bonds become just memories?

In relationships, longing can take many forms. It can be the absence of someone who is gone or the emotional distance within a relationship that still exists. Sometimes, we miss a time that will never return, conversations that are in the past, or even a version of ourselves that existed alongside someone.

And along with longing, often come the opinions of others on how we should deal with it. “Move on,” “time heals all wounds,” “don’t dwell on it.” But is there a single formula for dealing with absence? Not every opinion is like nourishing rain; some only confuse and delay our healing process.

Therefore, I want to share something important: the most valuable feedback on how to deal with longing is your own. If someone tells you how you should feel, take a deep breath and ask yourself: “Does this really make sense to me?” Listen to what your heart has to say, because no one knows the weight and meaning of your emotions better than you.

In relationships, learning to deal with longing in a healthy way also teaches us about detachment, about respecting cycles, and about the importance of valuing the present. Not everything that fades away needs to be forgotten, but rather given new meaning. Healthy longing is the kind we let come and go, like the waves of the sea – lightly, without pressure, and without judgment.

Positive Day! A kiss on the heart!
